progress in the basement:
laying laminate over vinyl flooring

we bought laminate flooring for the basement waaaaaaaaay way way long ago -- even before we bought the vinyl flooring for the laundry room! it was something fish wanted to get done asap, but other projects kept taking precedence: yardwork, the deteriorating window header, the dining room table...not to mention fish's full-time job.

when we bought the laminate, we tried to match it as close as possible to the red oak hardwood in the rest of our house:

there was a pretty good sale at home depot and we spent only $300 for the moisture barrier, underlayment, and laminate for the lobby (and its closet) and fish's study-space.

fish laid new vinyl in the laundry room due to the extreme slope towards the floor drain. the half bath will be getting matching vinyl for the same reason. the furnace room and harry potter closet will remain concrete floors. the stairs up are the same ceramic tile as the kitchen it leads to.

to begin, fish cleaned the original vinyl floor as best as he could but, as you can maybe tell here...it was pretty nasty. blech.
sorry for the crappy phone pictures. between the diaper-changing and spit-up-cleaning, it's a chore to run upstairs for my good camera.

he removed the baseboards then taped down the moisture barrier:

...and underlayment:

he laid the laminate in the same orientation as the rest of the house.

i started to get verrrry excited at this point. when we moved in, it was hard for me to see the basement as anything other than a cavelike storage space. but now! now, i'm planning to take over the lobby and turn it into a playroom -- then i won't have to worry about toy storage in the sunroom any longer. hallelujah!

we initially planned to paint the trim white (as it is in the rest of the house), but it matches laminate pretty well so now we're debating whether to put in the unnecessary effort.

fish's fancy new study-space:

SO...that's where we're at now. fish has a rough two weeks ahead of him at work so the basement will likely sit like this for a bit. i'll be back with updated pictures of the lobby future playroom and fish's study-space when we get more accomplished. :)

in the meantime, i'll leave you with this pic of our boys. love.

  2. Looking good! Your basement seems a lot brighter and less-dungeon like than mine! I love the idea of putting the play area down there. That is the dream i have because I am too selfish to give up my office upstairs!
