mining for gold

<<< psst! you can see a full list of my diy projects here! >>>

time : minutes...hours
difficulty  ★ ☆ ☆ ☆
hazards : gold fingertips, bugs in the garden
would i do it again? : yes!

i recently bought the preschooler's busy book by trish kuffner for more ideas on how I could interact with and engage K. i highly recommend it -- it's packed with easy-to-pull-off ideas using items you probably already have around the house. one of the ideas that stood out to me was {mining for gold}. it's such a simple idea, a why-didn't-i-think-of-that idea...

if your boy is anything like mine, he LOVES playing in the dirt. K brings out every bulldozer, excavator, front-end loader, dump truck, etc that he has. it's the same parade of vehicles into the landscaping, day after day.

he always brings me treasures he unearths.
...including a worm once -- ICK!!

WHY did i never think to bury things for him to find??

look how easy this is!

   > rocks or pebbles
   > brass spraypaint
         - i found brass paint to be more impressively shiny gold than the gold paint
   > shovel or spade

all i did was gather a few small landscaping pebbles...

...spraypaint them gold...

...then bury them in K's favorite digging spot while he was napping.

besides the immediate gratification of watching him discover his first gold nugget...i think this is a project that will keep on giving. i buried about thirty little gold pebbles. i imagine they'll pop up unexpectedly for a while.

let the mining begin!
