goodbye 2012...

and now...a look back at what you loved on {crab+fish} in 2012...

thanks to a feature on {apartment therapy}, my most popular posts were the instructions for DIY washi tape switchplates and the collection of switchplates i've done in our home so far.

a look back...
(achieving goals)

do you know what feels great?? looking back at old posts and seeing that we accomplished goals we set for ourselves.
not great? terribly edited pictures i've posted for the world to see...

FOR EXAMPLE...K's room!

it was the one of the first areas we focused on because we wanted our little guy to have a safe place to play. and it was his first room. i don't know that he much cared, but WE were excited.

i wrote a post before we even closed about all our grand plans for K's room.

i talked about painting it from drab olive to bright white:

check! we immediately began brightening up that room on closing day.

the sunroom just got a lot comfier

i hope you all had a wonderful christmas!

we had a cozy christmas eve in our first house -- just me, fish, and K exchanging our small gifts for each other. it was perfect...i will have warm, fuzzy memories of it for many, many years.

K received another large influx of toys, yet...

it's (faux) snowing!

i have an abundance of white fuzzy balls (why?? they must have been for some forgotten craft project...) and what better way to use some than by hanging faux snow in the window?

christmas cocoa for our neighbors

it's the season of giving...and not much makes me happier than making something for others -- so i whipped up these jars of christmas cocoa which K and i then snuck onto our neighbors' porches!

they're a treat just to look at and verrry easy to put together!

chandelier crystals
become tree ornaments

i was packing away an old chandelier that was handed down to us from my grandmother...when the crystals caught my eye.
HO. LEE. GORGEOUS!

since the light fixture isn't really our style at this exact moment in time, i never bothered to look closely at the crystals hanging from it -- those are definitely my style!

i immediately repurposed them as ornaments on our christmas tree...

i'm one of those people that can be annoyingly cheery sometimes...and especially so during christmastime! so of course i wanted to attach a wreath to the front of my car! i'm just wondering why it took me this long to do it.

touches of christmas

i've already posted about a festive nightlight, my glittery patchwork tree, our christmas-sy car in a jar, some glistening HOs, and an in-progress pom-pom garland...but there are a few small holiday decorations around our house that don't warrant a full writeup by themselves -- hey, i set some little men in our window! -- so i decided to throw them all together in one blogpost.

...starting with these adorable nutcrackers!

they are only about fives inches tall. i bought the set of six for around $15 at a consignment shop a few months ago. i've been so anxious to display them! i love their feathery-fluffy powder-white hair.

a new shed. part two!

last time we talked shed, this is how we left her:

a solid structure...but still incomplete.

i went with fish to pick out shingles. even though it won't match our house now, we decided on a black roof for the shed because we plan on re-roofing the house with black shingles at some point within the next few years.

Dec 4, 2012

christmas car in a jar

i've seen many pictures of tiny trees strapped on cars floating around the internet this holiday season...and since i have access to what seems like thousands of cars via K, it was the perfect opportunity to add another little touch of christmas in our house!
SO. CUTE.

november in review

HOLY COW, IT'S DECEMBER YOU GUYS.
unreal.

it's time yet again to quickly recap our projects.

let's see what fish and i accomplished last month...

the big projects: i gold leafed my nightstand, fish converted an ikea tived ceiling light into a pull-chain fixture...and we finally had new windows installed!

i was so excited to have my gilded nightstand featured on {knock off decor}!

christmas garland, part 1.
making the poms.

i've mentioned briefly that i want to do a very simple and homemade celebration for our first christmas in this house. i'm trying very hard not to go buck-wild buying every sparkly thing i see.
   ...it's been hard, guys.

but...theoretically...i don't just want to go out a buy a houseful of decorations. i want our collection to grow and evolve over time. i want special ornaments that have meaning. i want to look back and associate heartwarming stories with them.

...like that one year i spent days and days furiously making a gazillion bajillion fuzzy pom-poms for a christmas tree garland:

see how i made all these bad boys after the jump!

putting the tree up

it's officially christmas season, right??

time for a giant mug of piping hot, extra-rich hot cocoa!

time for heartwarming christmas movies that teach important life lessons!

time for the {straight no chaser} holiday album on repeat for a month straight!
okay, i lied. i've been listening to their holiday album since two weeks ago.
.
.
.
OH NO.
time for christmas cards!
i haven't started yet!

we need to get the tree up STAT.

a new shed. part one.

this is the small metal shed that came with our house.
((previous owner's stuff))

it was barely serviceable. the concrete pad under the shed is level, but for some reason, there were rocks and planks of wood shoved underneath the structure, propping up one side and making it uneven. also, it was rusty. the door wouldn't close.
   ...and it was ugly.

we dealt with it allll summer. but, with winter coming, we wanted fish to be able to park in the garage -- this meant we needed a usable shed to move all of the tools, strollers, and toys that were currently occupying fish's rightful carspace.

gilded nightstand

update: AAAGGH! my gilded nightstand was featured on an hgtv #lovehome commercial! it started airing in march 2013. see it here:

i know.

what IS it with me and gold???

i have wanted a gold-leafed bedside table for a while now. i was inspired by this beauty at urban outfitters...and i realized the old nightstand from my childhood -- that i already have -- has a verrry similar shape.
don't ask how long it took me to realize that.

the wonder of cardboard...

we recently acquired a large piece of cardboard packaging that fish was *thisclose* to throwing away.

i'm sure he's sick and tired of me saving every. single. piece. of cardboard with even the slightest chance of being used in craft or playtime activities.  in other words, i'm sure he's sick of me saving EVERYTHING.

but, i'm extra-glad i saved this piece because...

convert any light to a
pull-chain fixture

fish leaves for work before the crack of dawn...so i don't even want to think about what time he wakes up. whatever the hour, it's pitch black outside. even after daylight savings time.
so...he definitely needed a light by the master closet.
we still have a LOT of work to do in this room...
